The birth of Silly Yak Cafe LtdThe cafe idea was first thought up by Cassie/Kaci Mealyea (me) in 2001 in the UK when I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. Over the following months I gained support from other Coeliacs/DH sufferers who also agreed that there was a real need to supply an eating establishment where Coeliacs/DHers and their friends and families could relax and eat without fear of being made ill by ignorant kitchen/serving staff, or even worse, having to explain over and over again about the importance of your diet to impatient, overworked and busy none English speaking staff and made to feel like an outcast. In the spring of 2002 I met Frank Mealyea, another Coeliac, on the UK gluten free messsage board and together we've decided to open the cafe for people like us as well as supplying 'normal' fare.About the Silly Yak Cafe LtdWe are opening the Cafe/Restaurant for Coeliacs(pronounced silly yaks) and DH(Dermatitis Herpetiformis)sufferers at home here in Bulgaria. We have views of Bourgas, also a pool to relax by and in between courses you can sample the local wines and spirits (Rakia being the most popular).Tthe Silly Yak Cafe kitchen will be completely Gluten and Wheat free with knowledgeable kitchen staff and the service will be welcoming, friendly and relaxed to enhance that 'no worries' holiday feeling. We are trying to grow our own hops here so that we can (over the next few years) make a Gluten Free beer as Bulgaria is becoming a more viable option for European Coeliacs. At first we thought about doing a site that would have everything a new Coeliac could possibly want, then we thought that had been done by a very nice guy called Giles with the C4C (coeliacs 4 Coeliacs) website so we've taken the lazy option and supplied a link there instead. We consider it to be the most important site for newly diagnosed coeliacs along with the UK message board. We think you will too. Particularly the 'travel' section which has printable dietary cards and "make your own translations" sites in lots of different languages. |
